A Broken Supply Line Can Cause More Water Damage Than You Think

Going on vacation is meant to relax you and take your mind away from your troubles. However, sometimes your troubles can catch up to you while away. When a Montrose couple left their home for a vacation, the last thing they expected was for a water supply line inside of their upstairs bathroom to break. The water ran for "at least eighteen hours," undisturbed, according to Tom Miller, Owner of SERVPRO of Montrose/Telluride.

When the mother-in-law went to the home to "check on the cats and make sure the house was okay," she discovered that "...it wasn't." Miller further explains that the house had sustained a significant amount of damage due to the water running freely. It was able to spread to the kitchen and downstairs to the basement, merely because it was left unaddressed for almost an entire day.

The water had spread from the opposite end of the home to find its way into the kitchen. Miller points out that because of how far the water spread and how long it was around, SERVPRO "had to pull up all the floors... [and do] flood-cuts." Inside the kitchen, "all of the cabinetry, appliances, everything, had to come out."

Once the water damaged cabinets and appliances were removed, and the flood-cuts were made, SERVPRO was able to focus on drying out the structure of the home. Using tools like air movers and dehumidifiers, the technicians can draw the moisture out of the structure of the home.

As for the basement, according to Miller, "a lot of the water ran across the ceiling and down into the walls...so most of the damage came down here." While the floors and cabinetry needed to be removed upstairs, the demo was more extensive in the basement. "We tried to save as much as we could, but a certain amount needed to come out." However, just like the upstairs, SERVPRO "completely dried out the structure and now they're ready for their rebuild."
